As most people in the industry, I love to travel. Because of this, the ESL field seemed like a logical choice. During the last year of my Bachelor’s Degree I decided that I indeed needed to spread my wings and see what this beautiful world had to offer. I decided to do a TEFL Certificate and then drove off to sunny Mexico and Central America! My journeys through this region gave me the travel bug and it hasn’t stopped!
My next major destination was Asia, where I spent over a year teaching in Japan.
I lived and worked at a small private school in Ise, Mie prefecture where I learnt just how wonderful the Japanese culture was. I not only had the opportunity to teach both children and adults, but to also live, eat and breathe the lifestyle. I was introduced to the art of flower arranging, green tea ceremonies, kimono-wearing classes, food, music, and the lot. I was able to travel around the country, make many beautiful life-long friends, learn some of the language and have the experience of a lifetime. I am so thankful to have done a teaching course and to have had the chance to really see how big and beautiful the world is!
After I finished my contract in Japan, I flew to Sabah, Malaysia where I taught summer camps to Taiwanese students. This was a chance to travel around Sabah and explore some of the beauties this place had to offer, free of cost, I might add! This then led me to some other camps situated north of Taipei, Taiwan. My flights and accommodation were paid for and I again had the chance to travel, teach and learn the joys of yet another culture. It was amazing!
Through this and other travelling experiences I came to the conclusion that this was the life I was supposed to have. I then packed my bags and came to Australia where I finished my Master’s degree in TESOL and taught at various language schools in Brisbane. Now, here I am until I come to the decision to explore yet another world destination!
