Probably best known as the homeland of the Inca people, this could be your chance to visit the famous lost city of Machu Picchu, climb the Andes, feast on local cuisine, including wild boar, turtle and even piranha! Plaza de Armas, LimaFor the TESOL/ESL teacher looking to teach in Peru, most positions are available in the capital Lima, where there are a handful of language schools regularly looking for qualified and experienced English teachers. While qualifications and experience is looked upon favourably, schools are willing to look at hiring just native English speakers.

Jobs can generally be found all year round. Most positions are not advertised internationally, and you would have a much better head-start if you were already in Peru - also it is much more likely you can secure better pay and living conditions if the job is found when you are already there. You could try dropping into the centres to discuss a position, or else most other jobs are found by word-of-mouth so just ask around.

Peru is know for its wool productionMany schools have a trial period for new teachers which comprises of teacher training - this is more than likely unpaid. Once you start proper teaching expect a salary of around 1,500 to 2,500 pesos per month, this equates to $460-$770 USD per month. You will probably not be able to save that much, but the money is still much higher when compared with average local wages, and can be supplemented by private lessons on the side.

Volunteer work is also available where you can truly immerse yourself within the culture. Most volunteers find themselves working with orphanages, street children and many others in need of your support. Accommodation is usually with a local family so what a great to experience this fascinating culture first hand, pick up some Spanish and eat some of that truly unique food!
